The Survival Kit Cache Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Mention essential items or "Kit" among geocachers and the usual list is GPSr, swaps, camera, poking stick, or more recently some form of protection.
Most people placing caches on Mount Wellington are responsible and include information about terrain changes and the changeable weather, advising that people take cool and warm clothes, rainwear and extra food and water.
This cache is designed to raise awareness, especially as the seasons turn, of what cachers do carry, and what they probably SHOULD carry when out in the wilds of Tasmania, not just caching on mountains.
Type "the ten essentials" into a search engine and you will find a list of gear recommended by all hiking sites, camping sites, hunting information sites, and outdoor survival sites. his information is also to be found in books on these topics. This list includes:
1. Map.
2. Compass.
3. Rain Gear and extra clothing.
4. Sun screen and sun glasses.
5. Water and a way to purify it.
6. Extra Food.
7. Firestarter and matches.
8. First aid kit.
9. Army knife or multi-purpose tool.
10. Flashlight and extra bulbs.
As cachers carry a GPSr, and usually a map and compass as back ups this is covered. I have also noticed that cachers are usually clothed and "slip slop slap". I've also never seen a cacher go hungry, so thats not an issue.
This cache then, is based on the "Survival" items that we probably should carry outdoors all the time, but especially when caching on the mountain. Can you gather and purify extra water if needed? Can you light a fire to purify water or get warm? Do you have a first aid kit with you when you cache?
This cache will help make you prepared for all the vagaries of Tasmanian weather. Due to geocaching guidelines this cache does not have knives or matches or lighters. However at the time of placement it contained:
A FTF prize of an almost complete "kit" containing an instant hand warmer, emergency blanket, light stick, keyring torch, magnesium flint stick, Fresnel lens, and a compass whistle in a small belt pouch;
Instant Hand warmers;
Emergency blankets;
Flint sticks;
First aid kits;
Whistles;
Compasses;
Light sticks;
Torches;
Fresnel lens;
Tissues.
Swaps don't have to be themed, swap out what you need and at some point I will restock the aid items.
Cache is on the Hunters Track leaving from the Chalet. While there continue on to Snuva's excellent Junction Cabin, and other caches further down the mountain.
