FOLGORITO AND THE GOTHIC LINE
Folgorito and Carchio are two smaller summits of Apuane but are historically important because were posed on the "Gothic line".
This was the last defensive barrier in Italy of Germans during their retreat.
Built during summer 1944, here was destroyed at the sunrise of the 5th of April 1945 by the Nip-American Army, well helped by the Italian Partisans.
After three days of hard fighting, the Germans retreated permanently and, after this they didn't organize others defence: to avoid others destructions, the "generalfeldmarshall" Kesselring decided the surrender!
Unluckily, more than eight mount of presence of the front, left this land mostly destroyed and, what was worst, the population of entire villages were killed, in reprisal of Partisans attacks , by the SS and the Italian Army of Salò Republic (RSI).
The roads of the north of Tuscany are full of headstones with long list of names: Partisans and Civilians murdered during fighting and reprisals!

About the cache, drive in direction to PASQUILIO and park your car in an open space at
N 44.03460° E 10.19278°.
You recognise it for the presence of a big metal poster with the story of the battle and, above, a big headstone.
Take the "German dirt road" showed on the poster (at an Y, keep the right). It is wide and flat. At the end you arrive in a big open space with the rest of military installations on big terraces.
On the left, at the top, a monument with a wonderful view.
If you wish, at half of this "dirt road", you find a sign for the "path" to "Monte Folgorito - Linea Gotica": taking that you will arrive at the monument, seeing where the break-trowgh uppened!
The big terraces were excavated and all the constructions built by the hard labour of Italian civilians.
At the open space, the "German dirt road" ends, and becomes a narrow path going to the rest of others installations and terraces. It arrives to Seravezza.

IL FOLGORITO E LA LINEA GOTICA
Il FOLGORITO e il CARCHIO sono due vette minori delle Apuane, che però regalano panorami e paesaggi veramente interessanti.
Queste due montagne racchiudono molte peculiarità della nostra catena: se il Folgorito, con i suoi ginepri ed i suoi pini, ci fa capire che il mare è veramente a due passi, il Carchio, con le sue rocce e le cave, ci ricorda il duro cuore di marmo delle Apuane.
Folgorito e Carchio rivestono anche un'importanza storica, visto che da qui transitava la Linea Gotica - bastione difensivo costruito dai tedeschi - lungo cui correva il fronte di guerra in Italia durante le ultime fasi della seconda guerra mondiale: a nord erano attestate le forze dell'asse, ovvero la Wehrmacht, le SS ed i militari della Republica Sociale (RSI), a sud gli alleati angloamericani.
La linea tagliava in due la penisola italiana da Massa-Carrara a Pesaro e si estendeva per una lunghezza di 320 km. La linea Gotica passava anche dal M.Folgorito: infatti nell'area di vetta si trovano una trincea con due ricoveri e due bunker.
All'alba del 5 aprile del 1945, proprio tra il Carchio ed il Folgorito, la fanteria angloamericana, guidata dalla formazione partigiana dei Patrioti Apuani, sorprese i soldati tedeschi del generale Otto Fretter Pico,aprendo così il primo varco sul settore occidentale della Linea Gotica e dando avvio alla liberazione definitiva.
Riguardo la "cache", andate in macchina in direzione Pasquilio.
Parcheggiate in uno slargo riconoscibile da un grande cartello con la storia della battaglia del 5 aprile.
Coordinate park: N 44.03460° E 10.19278°.
Prendere la "strada sterrata tedesca" di cui parla il cartello. Al bivio a Y andare a destra.
E' larga e piana ed arriva in un grande slargo fatto di terrazzamenti e resti di postazioni.
In alto a sinistra, un monumento con vista stupenda.
Volendo, circa a metà della "strada sterrata" prendere, sulla sinistra, il sentiero per "Monte Folgorito - Linea Gotica": arriverete al monumento vedendo dove è avvenuto lo sfondamento.
Oltre il grande spiazzo, c'è un sentiero che porta fino a Seravezza, passando per altri terrazzamenti e resti di fortificazioni.
LA "CACHE" E' SUL SENTIERO STESSO, AI PIEDI DI UN GROSSO ALBERO
