Geocache Description:

The cache is a square plastic container containing a list only. Muggles may be using the trail and nearby dog park. The trail is the Cumberland Gap Greenway, built by the city of Cumberland Gap on the old Knoxville-Cumberland Gap-Louisville Railway.

About 700 feet south of the cache site is an old railroad tunnel built around 1888, which has been renovated into a trail and maintained by Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. They were able to preserve some of the original brick lining, so walk in a little ways and check it out. The arched insets along the bottom of the brick portion are the tops of “manways”, niches in the wall that a person caught in the tunnel when a train came though could jump into and avoid death. The original railroad tracks were about 6 feet lower than your standing. Continue south through the tunnel and you will be on Harrogate’s Daniel Boone Trail and Arboretum.

Walking north from the cache about 0.2 miles will take you to the historic town of Cumberland Gap, and includes walking across two covered bridges. When you walk through the second bridge you will get a great view of THE Cumberland Gap, a very historic passage through the mountains. Native Americans, European pioneers, Civil War soldiers, all made use of this place, so stop and breathe in the history.
