Geocache Description:

Hurst Wood is now part of the Red Rose Forest and is a lovely place for a stroll. The cache is on the Outwood Trail opposite the entrance to the Wood. It's often very wet and muddy here.

Hurst Wood is being developed as a community forest by the Forestry Commission who lease it from the Red Rose Forest. It's borders contain many ancient oak trees, and new plantations of birch, holly and various broadleaves are being established around a network of paths.

Access to the wood from the east is via Copper Lane off Ringley Road. Western access is by two points on the Outwood Trail (part of the Sustrans National Cycle Route 6), one of which is where the cache is located. It's normally quiet along this stretch of the trail apart from incursions by illegal off-road motorcyclists at weekends - do keep your ears and eyes open for them as they have caused accidents before now, and if you consider them to be a nuisance, report them to Greater Manchester Police on 0161 872 5050 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The cache is a plastic butty box containing log book, pencil, sharpener and swaps. Please make sure the lid is on properly when you replace the box.
