This cache is part of the ten-county
Allegheny GeoTrail project. It contains a special stamp
to be used in your GeoTrail passport, which you'll want to
obtain before setting out to find the cache. Please do not
remove the stamp! Get your passport stamped at 6 or more AGT
caches within a county, and get a FREE geocoin representing that
county. There are ten different coins to collect, plus a bonus
11th coin if you get all 10 counties. Click the logo for more
information!
This is the second part of the North Fork geocache series. Park at
the bridge (41 16.006N, 78 56.723W) and cross the bridge. Enter the
woods along an old road (not very well defined) and work your way
to the cache location. Take your time and explore this great area.
And don't forget to check out some of the creek - it creates some
great spots as it winds its way through the hemlocks. Another point
of interest is an old footbridge across the creek. Visit this
location (41 16.115N, 78 56.392W) but beware, the bridge is closed
to traffic (and you will see why!). North Fork used to be a superb
trout stream, but acid drainage and iron seeps have spoiled its
water quality. The North Fork Watershed Association
(www.nfwatershed.org) is currently working to return the creek to
its once pristine condition. Some history: this area was heavily
timbered in the late 1800's and early 1900's, and the Brookville
Railroad once traversed the valley all the way to Richardsville. Be
aware that this cache is located on PA Game Commission lands and is
hunted throughout the year. Wear orange during any season. Check
out the PA Game Commission web site for more information and
seasons. *****Congrats to Smoky Bear 1 for FTF!*****
