Geocache Description:

It's close to the parking lot, but unless you have the needed tags, you might not want to park right in front of the cache.

"We Need The Rain", isn't only a much used phrase, but it is a reality.

Down the ramp from the cache and parking area is Rocky Gorge, one of the reservoirs serve as a major drinking water source for more than 500,000 WSSC customers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Water from the Rocky Gorge Reservoir is filtered and purified at WSSC’s Patuxent Water Filtration Plant, near Laurel. At times the water level is up to the boat ramp on this side of the bridge, and over some of the parking lot on the far side. Near the end of the summer of 2008 the water level was down over 10', and only a trickle flowed down the channel at the foot of the boat ramp. Take a look at the "satellite" view on Google Maps, that shows the lake when once was full, then take a look at the condition of the lake today.

We need the rain to fill the lake, but water conservation will help from draining it. Another benefit if you're a fisherman, there will be water for the fish to live in.

** FTF honors to to TripMD **

Over the winter the Rocky Gorge reservoir was barely a trickle with most of the area between the boat launch ramp and the parking area on the other side of the bridge nothing but a mudflat - so dry and hard I walked on it for about half a mile taking pictures. And the boat ramp was next to useless.

With the rains this spring (2008) it is now full. But central Md is still behind on our water for the past few years.

When I placed the Travel Coin in this cache May 24th there were canoes on the lake, a good way to enjoy our waterways but knowing the bottom terrain they do have to stick to the Montgomery County side up here near Brown Bridge/Ednor Road. Further down river there should be deep water up to close to shore.
