On 1st September 1715 the court in Saint-Germain agreed on a plan of campaign. Two Jacobite armies would be raised in the North, one in Northumberland and one in Scotland. These armies would act as a feint, drawing the Government army away from London and then refusing to engage it in battle. Once the Hanoverian forces were committed, the King would land in the South-west, raise the local population, meet with the rebels from Wales, march to Oxford, a Jacobite stronghold, and then on into London.
On 5th October James Radcliffe, third and last Earl of Derwentwater met with the others near Dilston under cover of a race meeting. Here they 'boldly resolved' that the time had come to ride out and declare openly for James III. Greenriggs, a moor between Redesmouth and Sweethope Loughs, was fixed as the muster place for the next morning.
In North Tynedale, a Roman milestone on the top of Waterfalls Hill (off the A68, near Tone) marks the spot where the Earl of Derwentwater, together with a few followers, met up with ‘General’ Thomas Forster and some other men, at the start of the Rising on 6th October 1715. From here the rebels moved north to Plainfield Moor in Coquetdale where many more members from the Northumbrian gentry arrived to enlist.
