A small cache situated on Jersey's rugged North coast offering stunning views towards Bonne Nuit and Bouley Bay.
The cache is very close to two caves in the parish of Trinity which are of geological importance for the early history of the island. Unlike the other two Palaeolithic caves on the island - La Cotte de St Brelade and La Cotte a la Chevre - these caves probably weren’t inhabited by humans, but contained an important fossil animal record. Notably a small Red Deer variant (Cervus elaphus jersiensis) that evolved through genetic isolation on the island. A similar phenomenon noted in other small islands particularly in the Mediterranean during this period of time.
The cache itself is next to a spring that, as Folk Lore states, has the double virtue of giving sight to the blind, and hearing to the deaf - La Fontaine des Mittes.
The naiads that lived in this grotto for several centuries were called Arna and Aiuna. They enjoyed each others company in idyllic peace surrounded by the sheer beauty of nature to be found here. Never a cloud darkened their lives or affection for each other and they lived in peace and joy.
Then one evening in the autumn as they were seated watching the last rays of the setting sun come down into the sea, a bright light descended from above calling their names. “Arna, Aiuna your allotted time to live on the earth has dawned and it is time to move on.” Upon hearing this they were elated and rose up towards the light. Then they realised that they would never see this beautiful place again and in a moment of sadness a tear fell from an eye of each to land here on the earth. Due to the fact that the drops of water were so pure the earth could not take them so a spring sprang forth and will continue to spring for ever.
So we hope that if you taste some of this spring water whilst you’re at the cache it will help improve your caching vision and improve your hearing so you can hear and see the true beauty around you on your caching journeys.
The cache contains a few small trade items, log book and pencils and will fit small TBs and geocoins.
