Wee Bit of Dublin History
This is a multilevel cache which will require less than a half
mile of walking. You could drive, but there is really no need. From
the parking coordinates you can actually see all 6 of the cache
stages. The final cache is a log only stored in a small
container.
The initial coordinates will take you to a parking location. The
building adjacent to this parking area was once home to Dublin High
School. It continues to be used by the civic minded of the city.
Note the year the building was built and use to calculate the
coordinates for the second stage.
Stage 2: AAA = (year the building was built) minus 1588 BBB = (year
the building was built) minus 1419 N 32* 32.AAA W 082* 54.BBB
You are standing in front of a historic theatre in downtown Dublin.
Most of Dublin’s locals can remember watching the big screen at
this location. The theatre has been remodeled and is currently used
for many of the performing arts. Note the building on either side
of the theatre. On the left is the Fred Roberts Hotel. In its day
this was the premier sleep over when visiting Dublin. On the right
is the Christ Episcopal Church. Christ Episcopal Church, a parish
in the Diocese of Georgia, began as a small group of people in the
1890s with a dream of having an Episcopal Church in Dublin. The
present church building was constructed in 1898 and consecrated on
February 5, 1899, by the Right Reverend C. K. Nelson. It is the
oldest standing public building in the city. The church is built in
the shape of a cross with its interior constructed of heart pine.
Note the year that the hotel was built and the year that the bell
tower at the church was dedicated.
Stage 3: AAA = (year the hotel was built) minus 1605 BBB = (year
the bell tower was dedicated) minus 1514 N 32*32.AAA W
082*54.BBB
You are standing on the steps of a building which has been placed
on the National Register of Historic Places. While its hours of
operation are limited it is a good place to visit and learn much of
Dublin’s history. In the front of this building there are multiple
monuments. The largest of these is in honor of fallen soldiers. A
second is in memory of the fallen law enforcements officers of
Laurens County. Note the 2 years inscribed on the larger of the
monuments. Subtract the lesser from the greater to obtain a whole
number. This number plus 320 equals CCC. Note the year of death of
the first Georgia State Patrol officer from Laurens County who was
killed during the line of duty. Subtract from this number 1440 and
this will equal DDD.
Stage 4: N 32*32.CCC W 082*54.DDD
Notice that the architecture of this church may remind you more of
a castle than a church. It continues to be one of the prominent
downtown churches in Dublin. Note the year which the church was
constituted and the year the sanctuary was erected.
Stage 5: AAA = (constituted year) minus 1426 BBB = (year the
sanctuary was erected) minus 1399 N 32*32.AAA W082*54.BBB
You are now on the front lawn of the local home of a famous
Captain. Hardy B. Smith was assigned 1st Sergeant July 9, 1861 and
elected Jr. 2d Lieutenant July 18, 1861. He was wounded in the arm,
necessitating amputation, at Mechanicsville, Va. June 26, 1862.
Sergeant Smith was elected 1st Lieutenant June 10, 1863; Captain
September 17, 1863 and retired April 30, 1864. This is the second
of the buildings visited which has been placed on the National
Register of Historic Places. It is currently being restored through
local efforts.
To get to the final cache count the number of windows on the front
of the house and note the year that the house was originally
built.
Final Stage: AAA = 469 minus (number of windows) BBB = (year
built) minus 1270 N 32*32.AAA W 082*54.BBB You are standing near a
monument placed in memory of Grady Wright. Mr. Wright was the owner
of a local nursery and landscape company. He was responsible for
many of the beautiful landscapes in and around Dublin. The cache is
hidden in a small container that if operational would provide
nourishment for the plants. Please help me remember the
contributions of Mr. Wright by removing my cap, signing the log and
then certainly, replace my cap. My hope and desire is that you have
a learned a wee bit of history about this Irish town.
