Geocache Description:

You will be looking for an ammo box. The information in the description was taken from the book, Spectacular Rogue, by Edwin P. Hoyt and the FBI website.

The book can be checked out from our public library. You have to ask for it at the circulation desk. It is not on the shelves.

Who was the Spectacular Rogue?

He was one of Concord's most notorious sons - Gaston Bullock Means.

When Gaston B. Means died at 59 in 1938, he was justifiably reckoned to be just about the most preposterous liar and swindler ever to smile at a sucker.

He was raised in his family home in Concord and was known as Bud. He would often hang around the courthouse, where his father was a lawyer, listening for any little "bits of information" he could get for his father - so his father could win his cases.

After completing two years at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Gaston set out on his own.

At various times in his life, Gaston held many different types of jobs. He was superintendent for the graded school district in neighboring Stanley County (for 2 years he supervised 32 teachers!). He also worked for James Cannon and the Cannon Company, the German government, the famed William J. Burns private detective agency, the FBI, and President Harding.

This multi-stage cache will take you to the house Gaston was raised in, by a location where Gaston was accused of murdering a woman who "lost" a great deal of money, and the final resting place of Gaston Bullock Means.

Gaston was accused of murdering wealthy Maude King. He told the authorities that she either accidentally shot herself or did it on purpose. She was right handed, but yet she was shot in the back of her head, on the left side. The "Northern Yankee" lawyers came to Concord to try the case...and lost it. Gaston was found "not guilty" of the crime.

Gaston died in Leavenworth Prison while serving time for swindling money in the Lindberg Kidnapping. No one thinks he had any part of the kidnapping, but he "supposedly" received over 100,000.00 in ransom money from Evalyn Walsh McLean (at the time, the owner of the Hope Diamond)who was a friend of the Lindberg family who thought that Gaston had connections with the kidnappers - and would know how to get the baby back home safely.

You'll have to do a little "ciphering" to arrive at the final cache. As you are traveling on the road to the location, you'll pass very near the location of the spot where Maude King lost her life.

The first stage (listed coordinates) will take you to where the Means family lived. The coordinates may be a little off due to the trees. This is the house the FBI ransacked looking for the Lindberg ransom money. It was never found.

The street address is 138. Pull over and park. On the second story, above the front door, there is a window with little window panes. How many panes are in the window?

We're making this one easy for you by telling you where to go. Let's just say, for Team Hambo to find the grave, it took us two different days and over 5 hours. We knew which cemetery, just not the location of the grave! Thank goodness there was a groundskeeper present or we'd still be looking!

The above coordinates will take you to the final resting place of Gaston B. Means. How many Means family members are buried in the Means plot?

__________

North Coordinates - Use Posted North Coordinates

To get to the final coordinates, take the number of panes in the window of the Means home and multiply this number by 60 and then add 106. Subtract this number from the last three digits and then add 2000 to the North coordinates to get the final North coordinates.

West Coordinates - Use Posted West Coordinates

Take the number of Means family members buried in the plot and multiply it by 126. Add 4 to this number. Take this sum and add it to the last three numbers in the West coordinates. Subtract 4000 to get the final West coordinates.

Please replace the ammo box very carefully.

Have fun and enjoy.
