50th Anniversary
In 2008, the Linn County Conservation Board will celebrate 50
years of service to Linn County residents.
A year long celebration is planned to highlight all the outdoor
recreation opportunities available right here in Linn County.
In celebration of Linn County Conservation's 50th Anniversary there
will be 50 GeoCaches placed within various parks and recreation
areas in the next year.

Abbe Creek School
Museum
The historic Abbe Creek School building and grounds (2 acres) were
purchased in 1963, and in 1964, the restored schoolhouse was
dedicated as a museum site.
Abbe Creek School is believed to be the oldest standing
brick schoolhouse in the state of Iowa.
It is located on land claimed by William Abbe, the first white
settler in Linn County.
He came from Ohio in 1836 and homesteaded the the 400 acres near
Abbe Creek.
Abbe Creek School was first organized in 1844 by pioneer
homesteaders.
They engaged a carpenter to build the first log school.
The school was first called "Sumner" or "Kepler", but later became
known as "Little Brick." Records in the Linn County Assessor's
office indicated that the present schoolhouse was built in 1856 of
soft brick thought to be manufactured by a local brickyard.
The building measures 20 X 26 and in pioneer times served as the
center of community life.
It served as a school on weekdays and a church on Sundays.
Once or twice a month, the local farmers brought their families to
sing and spell in the one room school.
The Sugar Grove cemetery and the Abbe Creek site initially were all
together - but with the grading and paving of the Lincoln Highway
in 1925, the school was moved to face the east, and the cemetery
was isolated across the road from it.
A Lincoln Highway marker still stands on the school grounds.
