Geocache Description:

What might be most interesting about the Striped Peak Lookout are the nearby recreational opportunities. When you visit, plan to spend the day (if not the weekend) exploring nearby Salt Creek County Park and it's history, and grab the two (as of this writing) other nearby caches.

Built in 1940 by Washington State's Division of Forestry, Striped Peak's lookout was built on its southeast point about a mile from the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It consisted of a 53' tower with a 7x7 foot cab, and a cabin. It was destroyed in 1967. Today, Sriped Peak's lookout site is located on a large section of DNR (mostly recreational) property abutting the eastern boundary of Salt Creek County Park. As is the case with so many old lookout sites, this one is now adorned with multiple radio towers used by the Coast Guard, FAA, and amateur radio operators, among others.

About This Cache:
  • This cache is accessible from the west via trail or from the east by road.
  • The trail to Striped Peak starts in Salt Creek County Park to the west. It is about 2.25 miles long and traverses above the water before climbing to the peak. The walk to the top is finished via road. A complete circle can be made back to the park via road, or the hiker can return on the trail.
  • Road access to the lookout site from the east is on Striped Peak Road near Freshwater Bay County Park. Striped Peak Road IS NOT private, although it appears to be marked as such. After the initial 'PVT' sign, make sure you keep off of the remaining roads so marked, and you should have no problem finding DNR land.
  • There is a gate. It is a short .3 mile walk to the top from the closest parking, which has room for one or two cars. There can be mud, so be careful how you turn your vehicle around.
  • If you elect to drive to the nearest cache to the west (Salt Creek/Striped Peak (GCK2MQ)), make sure to approach from the west. The (turn-off) road to the east of that cache is not suitable for passenger cars. (I've marked it with a red X on the trail map in the gallery.) Contrary to what GC.com's Google Maps show, the road does go through from the lookout road to that cache. However, it is blocked where shown on the trail map. There is no vehicle access to either cache from Salt Creek County Park.
  • There is an easily found benchmark at the top.
  • You are looking for a regular sized Lock 'n' Lock with a small, unactivated geocoin as FTF prize.
