Geocache Description:

Erected in 1851, the Methodist Episcopal Church is the oldest church building in El Dorado County. It originally stood on the corner of Cedar Ravine and Main Street. The Ponderosa Pine beams are hand hewn. The first church bell was purchased from the sailing ship "Staffordshire." The church was restored by public contributions in 1961 and moved to its current location.

The church is designated California Historical Landmark 767. It was originally organized by the Rev. Charles Caleb Peirce on July 20, 1861, with services in the courthouse. After funds were raised, the cornerstone was laid in June, 1865, and the church was opened in December. In 1976, the church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural and religious significance. It is the oldest continually occupied church building in El Dorado County. The church and parish will celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2011.

When visiting our Pioneer cemeteries, as always, please visit quietly and respectfully.

The cache is located in the upper parking lot. It is a cammoed pill bottle with a log only.

Please watch for muggles in the area during school hours.
