Het Markdal
Het Markdal ligt ten zuiden van Breda en loopt tot de grens met België tussen Breda en de grens met België. Het is een open weidegebied en wordt doorsneden door de rivier de Mark (dintel).
In de jaren '60 van de twintigste eeuw is de meanderende Mark gekanaliseerd. Hierdoor kon het water sneller worden afgevoerd en werd overstromingsgevaar verminderd. Ook kwam de kanalisering de landbouw ten goede. Met het kanaliseren van de Mark is echter ook veel van de kenmerkende flora uit het Markdal verdwenen.
In het kader van natuurontwikkelingen is aan het begin van de 21e eeuw besloten de natuurlijke loop van de Mark te herstellen. Daartoe zijn bochten in de rivierloop aangebracht en is de rivierbedding steiler gemaakt. De omliggende weilanden zijn omgevormd tot schaalgrasland, kenmerkend door hun voedselarme bodem en hoge grondwaterstand. Hiertoe werd de voedselrijke toplaag van de bodem afgegraven. Op de afgegraven gronden zijn karakteristieke planten als dwergbies en Blaartrekkende boterbloem verschenen.
De reconstructie van het Markdal werd voltooid in 2004. Sinds die tijd is de visstand in de Mark aanzienlijk verbeterd. Ook is de oeverzwaluw in het gebied teruggekeerd. Andere vogels in het Markdal zijn de ijsvogel die net als de oeverzwaluw nesten bouwt aan de oevers van de Mark. 's Winters wordt het gebied bevolkt door de Canadese gans en de wintertaling.

The Markdal
The Markdal lies to the south of Breda and ends at the border with Belgium between Breda and the
Belgian border. It is an open meadow across the river by Mark (dintel).
In the 1960s, the meandering Mark was re-channelled. This allowed the water to flow better and greatly reduced the local flood risk. The channelling aided local agriculture as well. With channelling of the Mark, a lot of the distinctive flora from the Markdal disappeared.
Under nature developments, it was decided at the beginning of the 21st century that the natural course of the Mark should be recovered. Restructuring these curves in the river course has made in the riverbed steeper. The surrounding pastures are transformed into poor grass country, characterised by their high nutrient soil and
groundwater.
The reconstruction of the Markdal was completed in 2004. Since that time, the stocks in the Mark considerably improved. Also, the bank swallow in the area returned. Other birds in the Markdal include the kingfisher, which, like bank swallows builds its nests on the banks of the Mark. In winter, the area is inhabited by the Canadian goose and the Green–winged teal.
