In 1999, World War II veteran Michael Datsko donated 5 acres to the
city for the purpose of creating the neighborhood park. That year
he told the St. Petersburg Times that his property was struck by
five tornadoes over the years and he didn't want homes developed on
"tornado alley." Datsko, a retired electronic technician who died
in 2002, used to live in a mobile home on the property, which he
bought in 1969. Since the property was donated, the city acquired 6
adjacent acres to create an 11-acre parcel for the park.
The original name for the park was Datsko Park at East Largo, but
last year officials decided to call the park Largo Datsko Park to
emphasize the city's identity.
