Geocache Description:

Despite their name, earthhouses were not dwellings but cellars, built partly or wholly underground and alongside or attached to houses above ground. They are also known by their French name, Souterrain, because they are a widespread type of building, found also in Brittany, Cornwall and Ireland.

Souterrains vary in size from 5-46 square metres of floor space. There is a curved underground passage at this one, with dry-stone walls (the mortar is recent) and stone slabs making the roof. The air is very still and the temperature even, which would have made it ideal for a food storehouse. They had a purely domestic use and belonged to farming communities. Their storage capacity was considerable which suggests they served the needs of more than a single family. They coincide with the Roman occupation of Southern and Eastern Scotland in the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD, and may also have been used to store grain destined for the Roman Army as well as their own food. Excavation has shown that most were deliberately filled in around the turn of the 2nd Century, as if they were no longer needed. You will find this Souterrain near Culsh, which is 4.5 miles North of Aboyne, on the A974 2 miles NE of Tarland. It lies on the road between Tomnaverie and Queens view caches! The site of the Souterrain lies only a few yards from the road, with a house and farm buildings behind it. There is only room for one car to park at the side of the road. The road down towards the farm buildings is private. A bright torch is needed in order to view the interior. Some information here was taken from the Historic Scotland board at the site. The cache itself is not at the souterrain, but nearby. Please take your own pen.
