Beeler's
Station
George
Beeler erected a stockade, here, on his land in 1779. While
this afforded his family some protection, they lived in
constant fear of the Shawnee and Mowhawk tribes who tried
repeatedly to drive them away.
The
harassment became so frequent Colonel Beeler traveled to
Philiadelphia by foot, during the winter of 1780. There, he pleaded
with the Continental Congress to supply a force to protect the area
forts, and the settlers trying to establish claims in the
area.
His
request was granted. Captain Jeremiah Long was sent with a
garrison of 53 men to protect the frontier
families.
The
captain and his men helped to defeat the indians during an
attack in 1782, with the aid of local fighters Lewis and
Martin Wetzel, who were retained as scouts. The victory
enabled the settlers to retain ownership and develop their
lands.
Today,
this is the site of Beeler's Station Church.
