This cache is in Hartley Wintney and it is a film pot. The cache has some coins in, a pencil and a log. The area is very tree’y so GPS coverage might not be brilliant.
Hartley Wintney is in the borough of Hart. It has a High Street with some small shops and it also has a nice stretch of grass with lots of trees. This is the cache hiding place. Hartley Wintney has a lot of towns around it, including Fleet, Hook and Basingstoke which are all within 30 minutes drive.
The name Hartley Wintney was recorded in the 13th century as Hertleye Wynteneye which means “the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta’s island”. Winta is said to be a Saxon, who owned the island in the marshes where a priory of Cistercian nuns was founded in the middle of the 12th Century. Don’t worry, it’s not marshy any more!
Just up the road from here is Hartford Bridge where the roundheads had there headquarters in the Civil War (1642-51). Later on the 1939-45 war saw great changes and upheavals in the village with properties being requisitioned for war purposes; troops were billeted in the village and the Victoria Hall was used as a Red Cross Centre. By contrast, the town is very quiet except for a main road running through the middle of it.
For more information on Hartley Wintney see www.hartleypc.force9.co.uk/.
I suggest parking on Green Lane that is off the Fleet Road (A323).
