I PONTI DI VARA - L'ANTICA FERROVIA MARMIFERA
La Ferrovia Marmifera fu iniziata nel 1871 allo scopo di rendere più pratico il trasporto del marmo dalle cave al porto di Marina di Carrara.
Fu ultimata nel 1890 e comprendeva 22 Km di linea e 10 Km di raccordi.
Per le notevoli soluzioni tecniche fu allora considerata un prodotto ingegneristico di grande rilievo. Notevoli gli imponenti viadotti sopra Miseglia, la gallerie scavate nel marmo vivo, in particolare quella fra Fantiscritti e Ravaccione, i ponti di Vara e il ponte in ferro di Vezzala.
La ferrovia, che iniziò la sua attività nel 1890, fu dismessa nel 1964.
Oggi è possibile ammirare parte dell'ardito tracciato addirittura percorrendolo in auto: i binari sono stati infatti sostituiti da una strada asfaltata.
Essendo alcuni tratti a senso unico, per godere tutto lo spettacolo, consigliamo il seguente percorso:
1. Arrivando a Carrara dal mare, seguite per ospedale. Quando lo vedete sulla destra, andate dritto!
2. Dopo poco arrivate in località "Ponte in ferro" (il ponte della ferrovia marmifera è sulla vostra destra ed è molto bello da vedere)
NON seguite l'indicazione "ponti di Vara" perchè non fareste le gallerie!
Prendete invece a destra per Torano, Bedizzano, Cave di Colonnata.
All'inizio della strada potrete ammirare una locomotiva originale.
3. Arrivati a una rotonda, proseguite per Torano, Colonnata, Fantiscritti, ponti di Vara.
4. Al prossimo bivio seguite Fantiscritti.
5. Percorse le "gallerie nel marmo vivo", arriverete ai "ponti di Vara".
Parcheggiate nel "piazzale": N 44.08596° E 10.12739°.
LA CACHE E' SOTTO UN GROSSO BLOCCO DI MARMO, SUL BORDO DESTRO DELLA STRADA, DOPO "IL PONTE CON LE RUOTE"!
VARA BRIDGES - THE ANCIENT MARBLE RAILWAY
The building of "Marble Railway" started on 1871 with the target to help the transport of marble from mines to Carrara port.
It ended on 1890 and was 22 Km of principal track, plus 10 Km of secondary branches.
Many new technology were used and this made this work very interesting.
Big works were the "viaducts over Miseglia", the "tunnels excavated in the pure marble" (like the one between Fantiscritti and Ravaccione), the "Vara bridges" and the "iron bridge of Vezzala".
The railway was dismissed on 1964 but a good part of it was converted in paved road.
This makes possible to "live" it driving your car!
Because a part is "one way", we suggest you follow this itinerary:
1. arriving to Carrara from the sea, go to the hospital. When you see it on your right, go straight!
2. After few hundred meters, you arrive in the place "Ponte di ferro" (the iron bridge of the railway is on your right).
DO NOT follow the sign for "Ponti di Vara" because you will not see the tunnels!
Instead, go on the right in direction Torano, Bedizzano, Cave di Colonnata.
At the beginning of the road there is an original "locomotive".
3. At the "round" go in direction Torano, Colonnata, Fantiscritti, Ponti di Vara.
4. At the next crossroad, go to Fantiscritti.
5. You will drive in the "tunnels in the marble", and arrive at the "Vara bridges".
There is possible to park (N 44.08596° E 10.12739°).
THE CACHE IS UNDER A BIG MARBLE STONE, AT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD, AFTER THE "BRIDGE WITH WEELS"!
