TFTC04: Old Glory #2 has been fun for 7 1/2 years, but now it's time to close it. Today I rescued it from construction about 4 feet from the hiding spot. Thanks to all the 'cachers for finding this one so many times! -AF4IA

This is one of several caches celebrating the 230th anniversary of the Flag Act of June 14, 1777, which stated "Resolved that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

On Flag Day, June 14, 1923, representatives of over 68 organizations met in Washington for a conference, called by and conducted under the auspices of the National Americanism Commission of the American Legion, to draft an authentic code of flag etiquette. The code drafted by that conference was printed by the national organization of The American Legion and was given nationwide distribution. Paragraph 176(k) of this law states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

A project of Leadership Sandy Springs and the Sandy Springs Fire Department is to educate residents of our city about our flag. Youth (such as Scouts) will help destroy donated flags while learning about fire safety at local fire stations.
