Geocache Description:

(not in)The Young Family Cemetery

The founder of West Point was James Young, a young Virginian, who owned the land grant on which the town was established.

In fact he owned every lot and even the streets in the town. He also owned the ferry which crossed the Salt River and the hotel (which still stands today) at the old ferry landing.

Following several lawsuits over the existing overlapping land grants, the courts ultimately recognized him as The Proprietor of West Point.

Young lived practically his entire life in West Point and amassed quite a fortune in his various business enterprises.

Today there is a river walk along the banks of the Ohio River named in honor of James Young, as well as the bridge that carries the U.S. 31W highway traffic across the Salt River. Young was one of the investors that built the original turnpike that connected Louisville and Nashville, Tennessee (see Bridges To The Past).

I don't hide caches in cemeteries so the final coordinate will be a very short walk from Mr. Young and outside the cemetery wall.

To locate this cache, find the stone of James Young and determine the year of his death. From that number, subtract 1783 to determine the bearing in degrees. From that same number, subtract 1795 to determine the distance, in feet, you need to travel to locate the hide.

You are seeking an Rx bottle containing a zlok and log.

NOTE: This location is near an active railroad line. Parking coordinates are provided which will eliminate any reason to go near the track.

DO NOT APPROACH THE TRACK!
