Geocache Description:

The original cross was erected in 1945 to commemorate the Italian prisoners of war who built the Du Toits Kloof pass during the second World War. Before the pass was built, people had to go via Bainskloof to get to Worcester.
The current version (number 4) broke in half in 2002. My brother-in-law and myself went up with Guido in his helicopter to bring the pieces down for repair - a particularly exciting project. It was repaired by a local engineering firm, brought up by helicopter and re-erected by a group of farmers, mountain-club members and local Italians.
There is a section with slightly prickly bushes, so you could consider leg protection. The path is reasonably clear, but I have added extra waypoints to guide you. Stop around Waypoint 2 to catch your breath, drink some water and see if you can spot the cross from here. I have included a photo from this point in the gallery.
At Waypoint 3 you pass a pile of rocks which used to be the drop-off point for post. Post was brought here from Paarl and collected from Worcester and vice versa.
When we went up to place the cache there was a beautiful display of ericas.
It takes about 2 hours to get to the cache site. Elevation 700m above road level. The cache is NOT in the shiny stainless steel box at the base of the cross.
