Südlich von Dransfeld befindet sich der Berg, welcher mit Abstand die höchste Erhebung der Dransfelder Gegend darstellt, im Dransfelder Stadtwald, ein zum Naturpark Münden gehörender Gebirgsstock, der sich etwa auf halber Luftlinie zwischen Göttingen im Nordosten und Hann. Münden im Südwesten ausbreitet. Der Hohe Hagen ist einer der nördlichsten Vulkane in Deutschland. Er barg abbauwürdige Mengen vulkanischen Gesteines, das seinen Ursprung in der Tertiärzeit hat. Der Abbau von Basaltgestein am Hohen Hagen ist ab 1825/26 belegt. Bereits 1856 wurde der Steinbruch erweitert, in den 1920er Jahren setze die bedeutendste Zeit des Basaltabbaus ein. Das Basaltbruchgebiet betrug damals über 11 Hektar. Die Basaltvorkommen am Hohen Hagen waren aber nicht unerschöpflich, der Abbau wurde 1971 eingestellt. Basalt ist ein basisches (kieselsäurearmes) Ergussgestein. Es besteht vor allem aus einer Mischung von Eisen- und Magnesium-Silikaten mit Olivin und Pyroxen sowie calciumreichem Feldspat (Plagioklas). Basalt ist das vulkanische Äquivalent zum Gabbro (Plutonit), der die gleiche chemische Zusammensetzung hat. Die Geschichte des Basaltbruchs ist seit Herbst 2004 durch einen Geologie- und Bergbaupfad erlebbar.
