Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series visiting interesting archaeolgical sites within Tentsmuir Forest near St Andrews.

This cache is placed in the vicinity of a 17th century march (boundary) stone on which the following text is enscribed.

"The march between the Shanwell and Old Muirs Salmon fishing is a straight line from the top of Normans Law to the low water. This march stone stone stands in said straight line."

If you look closely you can see where the mason has made corrections to the carving of the words "between", and "line".

The tall thin shape and it's presence on the top of a small knoll show that it was carefully positioned to be easily seen from the beach or out at sea. When aligned with the distant summit of Norman's Law it would indicate to a fisherman when they had crossed the line between the two fisheries. The subsequent growth of the forest has rendered the stone ineffective and other structures in the forest have suffered a similar fate.
