Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series placed near sites of archaeological interest in Tentsmuir Forest near St Andrews and is located in the vicinity of a Victorian ice house.

These turf covered buildings were used for the storage of salmon, netted from the Tay estuary and awaiting transportation by horse and cart to the nearby railway station at Tayport. From there special fish trains ran nightly to serve Billingsgate fish market.

The building is now sealed and it's constant all year round temperatures have attracted a colony of Natterer's bats (Myotis Nattereri) which gain access through small rectangular holes cut into the steel door. Please don't disturb the bats.

An inscription carved into the door lintel reads "Alex Speedie 1888"
