Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series placed near sites of archaelogical interest in Tentsmuir Forest near St Andrews.

It is located beside a series of four shallow ponds that were the source of ice for the nearby ice house (GC19NQN).

In Victorian times, harsher winters than we experience now, meant that the ponds were a reliable source of ice every winter. Flooded to a depth of approximately eighteen inches, once frozen, the ice was broken up and taken by cart to the nearby ice house. Here the ice would spend the remainder of the year, slowly melting whilst maintaining the sub zero temperatures required to keep fresh caught salmon in perfect condition. The ponds are now maintained as a habitat for dragonflies.
