Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series placed near sites of archaelogical interest in Tentsmuir Forest near St Andrews.

It is located in the vicinity of a second world war military structure. This is a small circular concrete casting with a domed upper surface into which has been set a stainless steel pivot.

The purpose of this structure is unknown, was it a mount for a weapon or sighting equipment, speculations or facts are invited.

Mystery solved by Jack Aubrey (April 13, 2008) who logged as follows.

"The structure is a mount for a spigot mortar (aka the "Blacker bombard") - a weapon which probably terrified its crews more than it did any potential target".

Apparently it was considered so dangerous that the regular army refused to use them so they were given to the home guard!

The pivot can be found, close to the edge of the track and is moss covered and partially overgrown.
