There have been at least five huts on and around Mount
Feathertop, of which two currently survive. One of them is known as
Federation Hut, and this current one is the second such hut.
The first one was built in 1969 by the then Federation of
Victorian Walking Clubs, hence the name of the hut. The hut took
many years of effort to organise and was sited at the top of the
Bungalow spur as an alpine refuge. It was and is a popular camping
spot for people climbing Mt Feathertop (see GCRTBY - Plumage). The
hut was totally destroyed by the 2003 Bushfires.
The hut was replaced in December 2004 by a slightly larger hut,
similar in style. It is for Refuge purposes only, and all hikers
must bring tents. It continues to be maintained by the same
organisation, now known as Bushwalking Victoria.

The cache is a 500mil cliptop container, found 7 metres off the
track, and should be easy to find. Very worthwhile views are to be
found another 50 metres up the track.
The cache will be under snow in winter.
