Flash Mob: A large group of people who assemble suddenly in a
public place, do something unusual for a breif period of time and
then quickly disperse. In this case everyone is asked to bring an
umbrella, rain or shine! Everyone will open the umbrellas at ground
zero even if the sun is out.
Date: Saturday May 10th, 2008.
Time: 12:00 noon until 12:15...only 15 minutes!
Where: The Big Dam Bridge, Little Rock/North Little Rock,
Arkansas.
The Flash Mob event will be only 15 minutes long. You MUST be
present and sign the log sheet during this time to log the event!
After 15 minutes the logsheets will be locked away and if your name
isn't in the box, you can't log the event.
Itinerary:
11:45-Noon Participants will mill about seperately and
try to appear to be average muggles at either Cook's Landing (North
Little Rock side) or Murray Park (Little Rock side) or somewhere
along the bridge span away from ground zero and pretend not to know
each other or give anything away.
The bridge ramps are long and somewhat steep. My personal casual
walking time from the Cook's Landing side (slighty longer walk) to
ground zero is just under six minutes and I walk pretty fast
compared to most people. If your GPSr has a ETA function you could
use that to time your arrival, but try not to clump up or get
closer than 100 feet from ground zero until the horn sounds. The
bridge is very spacious so this shouldn't be hard.
There are 40 parking spaces at the foot of the bridge on the
Murray Park side, with about 100 more 1/2 a mile downstream near
the pavilions. The Cook's Landing side has 75 spaces at the foot of
the bridge, and several clusters of 10 or so (totalling about 50)
rangeing from 1/4 to 1/2 inland from the bridge, plus about 70 more
accessable by crossing the powerhouse to an island like area that
may or may not be open on that day. It will be a Saturday in May
however so plan ahead to make sure you have a place to park and can
get in place on time. You must be present in the area among
the flags during the 15 minute window to claim attendance.
High Noon An air horn will sound signaling the beginging
of the event and everyone will procede to ground zero in the center
of the Big Dam Bridge span where the flags are located. Move
quickly so it appears that the group is suddenly just "there". Only
pull out and open your umbrella as you reach ground zero (unless
it's actually raining.) The small folding umbrellas that can fit in
your pocket would be easiest to conceal if you have one. Keep it in
a pocket, purse or backpack if you can.
Pages out of a logbook will be handed out to anyone with a GPSr
and an open ammo can will be placed at ground zero. Sign the sheets
and drop them in the ammo can. Bring your own pen! A
clipboard, or other personal writting surface will probably come in
handy. One log sheet per person or caching name, if you cache as a
team, make a note on the logsheet how many people are with you
today, we want an accurate count. The Goal is 5,000 geocachers
worldwide.
Mingle, talk geocaching, trade coins, trade bugs, share stories,
brag about your caches or make arrangements to meet later to seek
the many caches nearby.
12:12 Everyone will assemble for a group photo. Get
together quickly as time will be short!
12:14 A name will be drawn from the ammo can to be
awarded the event prize of an unactivated "World of Geocaching
2006" geocoin.
12:15 It's over. The ammo can will be closed and everyone
should disperse quickly, to meet elsewhere if desired. (Cook's
Landing and Murray Park both have good picnic tables for anyone
that wants to hang around for a while.)
