Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the site of the old German Methodist Church. The only thing remaining here is the church’s cemetery. Some 30 years ago, the church was torn down, and some of the wood was used in the construction of the nearby Flaming Spirit Christian camp.

My great great grandmother, Christina Mayer, is buried here, as well as my great grandparents, Adam and Magdalena Yetter. Christina was born in Germany, and crossed the Atlantic three times during her lifetime – the first time in a sailboat on a journey lasting months. Also buried here is Adam Smith, my great great great uncle, who along with his wife, Anna, were the original settlers of Dixon County, Nebraska, in 1856. They later moved near their cousins here in Holt County. My most recent relative to be laid to rest here is my great aunt Emma in 2001, having lived to the age of 97.

There was, and still remains, a lot of German heritage here in Holt county. At a time when members arrived at this church in horse and buggy, messages were delivered and hymns were sung entirely in German, and people spent the entire day there.

My mother grew up on a farm in this area – just north of New Point. The old farm is home to some of my most precious memories – times when I used to visit and spend time with my grandmother, help with the chickens, the garden and a few cattle. Mom is an artist – she worked at Hallmark for a time before I was born, she met my dad at the Kansas City Art Institute, and is an accomplished painter. One of her earliest paintings is pictured here – it is of the old German Methodist Church. She says that when she painted it, she particularly wanted to capture the clouds in the background. I think, though, that as a true artist, visual imagery is always inseparable from emotion. I’ve seen this painting in my grandmother’s home all of my life. When I was young, I thought that a cemetery with dark clouds looked kind of ominous. Now, as I compare the painting with the photo that follows (taken from approximately the same perspective), I am reminded of how the passage of time inevitably erodes the evidences of our lives.

I hope that you enjoy the beautiful scenery in the area, and thanks for letting me share this bit of family history with you.
