This holly has given its name
to the cottage it stands by. There is thought to have been a
holly tree here since Saxon times. It marked the boundary
between Higher and Lower Budleigh, which all now form part of
one village. It used to be the scene of prayer and ceremonies
as part of the village perambulation (beating the bounds),
the last of which took place in 1854. Mark trees where
protected by law in the pre-Norman period. The tree may look
quite young but it clearly pictured in an 1898 photograph
proving that it is well over 100 years old.
