Greetings,

It has been a while since I first looked at this cache. I can't find any recent responses about maintaining this cache so for the time being it will be archived and removed from the active cache listings. We are no longer leaving caches stay disabled for extended periods of time.

Groundspeak and the geocaching community appreciate your contributions to geocaching and I hope to see this cache back in operation soon. If you can get it back up and running in the next week or so contact me to get it relisted. Otherwise plan to move it slightly and set up a new cache page.

Geocache Description:

You are looking for a small well-camouflaged container in Forest Park. Slight bushwhack required to find.

Forest Park is one of the many gems in St. Louis. We spend a lot of time in the park relaxing, walking our dogs, seeing the sights, and of course, geocaching.

You are looking for a small jewel box with gems inside. There is also a FTF coin courtesy of Hobbit Taz. Please place this coin in a cache hide of your own. Good luck, have fun, and BYOP!

History of the Jewel Box

The Jewel Box, located on a 17-acre site in Forest Park, was built by the City of St. Louis in 1936 and is operated by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry. It is listed on the National Historic Register. The Jewel Box was dedicated Nov. 14, 1936 and cost about $117,000, with about 45 percent coming from Public Works Administration (WPA) funds. It was designed by city engineer William C. E. Becker and Robert Paulus Construction Co. was the contractor. With its unconventional, cantilevered, vertical glass walls rising majestically 50 feet high, the Jewel Box opened in 1936 to national acclaim. The Post-Dispatch called the Art Deco-style structure, "the latest word in display greenhouses." It was an instant success, attracting more than 400,000 visitors a year in its heyday. For the last five years, the Flora Conservancy of Forest Park has created beautiful perennial and annual beds adjacent to the Jewel Box using plants and materials donated by local growers and funds from the Parks Department. Through their efforts, a fountain at the Jewel Box has been repaired and refurbished with water flowing from it for the first time in 30 years. The recently completed $3.5 million renovation of the Jewel Box insures that it will be a St. Louis jewel for future generations. In 1936 the Jewel Box was "the latest word in display greenhouses." Today it is an aged St. Louis treasure that has been restored to its former glory.
