Park across from the Hamburg Cove Yacht Club, outside the fenced parking area; room for 5-6 vehicles. Short, but steep and rutted approach to water. Please BYOP (bring your own pencil).
It’s March (as I write this) and my thoughts are turning to…kayaking! Hamburg Cove encompasses the lower portion of the pristine Eight Mile River as it flows into the Connecticut. This has been one of my favorite launch sites for a long time because of the varied trips you can take from here. At the put-in, you can go left and paddle under the Cove Road and Rt. 156 bridges to explore the small cove that awaits you inside. Or, head north up the cove, around an unnamed island, under the Joshuatown Road bridge and you will reach the spot where the Eight Mile River empties into Hamburg Cove. You can usually paddle a little ways past this point until you run out of water. There is a nice gravel bar at the end for lunch and a stretch. Alternately, if you paddle southwest the cove widens, you’ll see many boats at their moorings and some beautiful homes in the hills, and eventually come out onto the Connecticut River, 1.5 miles down, with Brockway Island right in front of you (also a nice spot to beach). For more information on the landmarks and history of Hamburg Cove, refer to the very informative book, "Tidewaters of the Connecticut River". At any time of the year I think Hamburg Cove is one of the most picturesque locations in CT. Enjoy!
