Geocache Description:

This cache is a park and grab. Easy parking is available at GZ. Muggles can be a problem especially on weekends, stealth may be required. You do not need to climb on the rocks or search in the electrical box on the pole. This is a micro, please bring your own write stick. Please let us know if there are any issues with this cache, and we will correct them ASAP.

This cache is near the finish line for the drag boat races held at Marine Stadium for many years (with the heyday of these events in the 60’s and 70’s).

In the early 70’s my friend’s dad was involved with the races so we would get in free every weekend. We all had our favorite boats, and their drivers were heroes to us.

My all time favorite was Ray Caselli driving “Panic Mouse” a blown fuel flat bottom (and the most dangerous drag boat class). My other favorites were Dwight Bale, and undoubtedly the most famous racer: Mary Rife, driving the Blown Fuel Hydroplane “Proud Mary” and the only woman at that time to drive in this class (the fastest of the fast boats).

The large “Marine Stadium” signs to the north of GZ cover what once were the timing lights that would display the elapsed time and speed of the winning boat. The finish line and timing system were near these lights (with the boats running from the north end of the stadium).

We mostly stayed on the “pit side” of the stadium but spent many days hanging out pretty close to where the cache is now located. (I even remember finding shade in the late afternoons next to the cache hiding spot, what memories!)

Marine Stadium was without a doubt the crown jewel of drag boat racing anywhere. Unfortunately urban development and the resulting noise ordinances forced the drag boats out of the Stadium. They were banned in 1977 although there have been some exhibition runs over the years as part of other events.
