Geocache Description:

The Valley Pronunciation Guide (VPG) cache series highlights places commonly mispronounced by non-natives (that includes us)!

The "Queen City" is the queen of mispronunciations in the Shenandoah Valley. The "u" is silent - STAN-tun, not STAWN-tun.

***Update May 2013 - The historic bridge to Sears Hill Park from downtown Staunton has been replaced, so you can approach from both directions again. From downtown, park near the train station. From the south, parking is on Winthrop Street where it meets Sears Hill Road.***

The cache is in Sears Hill park with an excellent view overlooking downtown. Just below your position you can see the "wharf" buildings with their 2nd floor loading docks. The clock tower, courthouse, and Mary Baldwin College are downtown landmarks.

Since this one disappeared three times within two weeks, I've repositioned it. The coordinates should place you at the overlook with benches. Count the number of vertical cylindrical posts on the decorative black rail - don't include the square main posts. Then walk to the fence bordering the sidewalk just below your position. Start at the far left and count off the same number of vertical cylindrical posts on that fence (again, don't count the square ones) to find the post with the cache on the bottom.

This cache is registered with the Staunton Department of Recreation and Parks. Cache is a black magnetic nano - it seemed to fit really well here. A safety pin or tweezers will help for removing the log sheet. Please replace carefully.
