Stort Navi #6 Hunsdon Mead view Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

FantasticCat: Not geocaching anymore so best to archive and free space up for new series. Sorry if poor maintenance has led to problems. Will collect caches still there when next in area. Thanks.

Geocache Description:

Part of a series along the Stort Navigation. This one is opposite (not in) Hunsdon Mead, a site of special scientific interest.

Cache is a cammoed magnetic container smaller than a 35mm film cannister. Too small for trackables which is just as well as has been muggled three times.
The nature reserve opposite has lots of bird life and flowers (if you get the season right!). For over 600 years the Mead has been managed on the ancient Lammas system under which local farmers graze their cattle in late summer after a July hay cut. If it were cut earlier some of the flowering plants would not have time to set seed for the following year. Grazing by cattle and sheep is allowed only between 1st August and 1st March, after which the vegetation is allowed to grow up.The remarkable abundance of wildlife found there is a result of that management regime. Enter it from the towpath at the east or west ends or just look at it from the nearby bench!
