Old A30 Revisited - Goss Moor

This is a shameless cache-n-dash, which is the first of a series to be placed on sections of road that were once part of the A30.

The A30 is the backbone of Cornwall. Over the years, road 'improvement' schemes have altered its course, leaving significant sections of the 'old' road that have been by-passed. And it's surprising how many of these orphaned bits of the old A30 there are in Cornwall.

The trip from Land's End to the county border (Dunheved Bridge), is about 80 miles. Up to 50 miles of which can be travelled using about 18 to 20 sections of the old A30. And I'm sorry to say that I think they have all been by-passed in my lifetime!

This particular A30 improvement scheme was completed in 2007. Running from Innis Downs to Indian Queens, it by-passses the Goss Moor bottleneck and the notorious Iron Bridge that was so regularly struck by high sided vehicles.

Empty Road

Sadly we will no longer have the pleasure of taking to the back roads in order to avoid the tourist's car park that was the Goss Moor. It is often eerily quiet now - look, not a caravan nor a VW camper in sight!

Empty Road

The cache is near what used to be the Castle-an-Dinas junction, which has been completely re-engineered. There are now dedicated cycle paths and bridleways. And ironically, part of the original carriageway has been turned in to a car park (waypoint below).

The cache is about a 300m walk from the car park, on flat tarmac. There is wheelchair access to within a few metres of the cache, but the last little bit involves some 'off-roading'. It's an easy cache-n-dash find, with the opportunity to explore the nearby Goss Moor Nature Reserve if you are so inclined and have the time.

There is room in the cache for coins and small TBs. The GZ can get a bit overgrown in the summer, so be ready for the occasional bramble when you hunt through the undergrowth!
