This cache is located in a scenic area a few miles north of Pine Ridge on the Ouachita National Forest.
How to get there:
In front of the Lum And Abner Store And Museum at Pine Ridge turn north on Hole In The Ground Creek Road. Go about 4 miles to a gate, the coordinates of which are N 34 degrees 38.136' W 093 degrees 54.402'. If the gate is not closed you can drive about another 1/4 mile to where you can park your vehicle.
The hike:
This is a very wild area and all the usual precautions for travel and visits to wilderness should be taken. The one way walking distance to the cache is a little over a mile. The trail that I usually follow is an unmarked 4-wheeler/ATV trail. The terrain is fairly level but the trail is rough and rocky in areas, with a couple of easy stream crossings. I think that most school-age children could make this walk. Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours on this walk. There are a lot of things to investigate and explore.
When I placed this cache in March of 2008 there was a considerable amount of logging activity going on in the area and therefore I cannot guarantee that the trail will not have been obliterated by this activity.
The trail parallels Hole in the Ground Creek, running roughly Northeastward. When you begin your hike there is the potential to get started up the wrong creek. There is a small tributary creek that enters Hole in the Ground Creek from the left in the vicinity of the parking area. The ATV trail will cross this creek and go over a small rise to enter the Hole in the Ground watershed.
The cache:
The cache is contained in an ammo box. It is placed in an area above twin waterfalls/swimming holes. In this case the treasure to be found is not so much the cache itself but the beauty of this area.
