The cache is a large coffee jar. Besides the usual swap articles, there is a First Find Trophy.
This cache is at the Vulcan mine at the little village of Irvinebank in the west of the Atherton Tablelands. You can drive right to the site in a four wheel drive, and can probably get there with a conventional drive with reasonable clearance. Finding the cache might be a bit of a challenge, so take insect repellent to enable you to stay a while. I didn’t, and I was doing something akin to a Boston Two Step all the time I was trying to get the cache co-ordinates. Probably not real good for accuracy.
To drive into Irvinebank is like taking a step back in time of almost a century. Tiny miners cottages line the street, the School of Arts building, the old bank building and Loudoun House, are fine examples of how our towns used to be. The pub is a bit of an outer, but you can get a cool drink and a feed there. The mill and museum are worth a visit. If you are driving in from the North-east as most of you would be, drive through the town, past the pub and turn up the hill at S 17º 25.738’ E 145º 11.972’. If you are in a two wheel drive vehicle, check out the steep pinch after passing a house. If your car can handle that, the rest is easy. There is good parking, and easy turn round area at the site. Don't wander too far off the roads - this is mining country, and deep holes are part of the landscape.
Cheers! and Good Hunting! Dan
