Small towns often do things in very unconventional ways. The
National Guard Armory in Placerville was for a number of years used
for classes as part of the American River College system. This was
known officially as the Placerville Campus. It was known, however,
to many locals as UBR, the University Behind Raley’s. B took a day
class (her first college course) there in the mid 1970’s and E took
evening classes (in electronics) later in the 1980’s. The portable
buildings were used for the classrooms and the equipment room in
the gymnasium was used as the bookstore. Sometime during its
history it switched affiliations and became part of the Consumnes
River system but it was always UBR to us!
The armory building has been used for The Boys and Girls Club of
America since 1999. It is also shown as the current address for the
Veterans Agency of the California National Guard. We have never
seen actual use of the building by active National Guardsmen…but it
is still listed as a California NG Armory.
Please use extreme stealth and consider that during some
weekends/weeks(county fair) this cache probably won't be available
because of a very high level of parking lot activity.
