Situated near the triangulation station at the top of Great Punchard Head. A remote spot with fantastic views.
The views from this high and remote spot are excellent but have to be earned!. From here you have the North Pennines spread out to the north, the Howgills to the west and the Three Peaks to the south. On the day I placed the cache I could clearly see The Lake District and Drax power station 70 miles away. This cache is in an obvious feature on a large flat rock. This one is really for people who like to get well off the beaten track. The shortest route is a 6 mile return trip from Tan Hill, the hardest is probably the approach from great Punchard Gill due to the rough terrain for the final mile. The easiest approach is to go to Rogans Seat and follow the faint path next to the fenceline northwards across the moor. A circular route from Gunnerside makes a fine day out. Some interesting goodies for FTF. 2022 update. The route from Great Punchard Head is now relatively straightforward due to the creation of a quad track all the way to the summit by the shooting community. A boggy route but now lacking the requirement for serious heather-bashing.
