Chiggers......don't you just hate 'em? Yeah, me too.
So why do Mesquite chiggers have the well-deserved reputation of being the nastiest group of the bunch?
The answer can be summed up in two words..........genetics.
Back in 1871, Samuel O. Samuell, a Mesquite landowner and entreprenuer, raised chiggers and decided to exploit his enormous population by staging "chigger fights". Every Friday night, he would take his troupe of chiggers down to Scyene and rake in the money while the locals bet on their favorite chigger. This quickly stopped, however, when a left-wing insect rights group effectively shut him down.
Undeterred, Samuell established a "chigger circus", but this venture also failed when it became obvious that the chiggers preferred the nether regions of the audience members over the confines of the circus arena.
Almost penniless now, Samuell turned to the rodeo. He entered his biggest, baddest, meanest chigger of all, one called "Digger", in the buckin' bull contest at the Mesquite Rodeo. On May 4th, 1874, Digger rode "Ole Calamine" for 32 seconds, a record that still stands today.
If you hunt this cache in the heat of a Mesquite summer, chances are you'll unwittingly meet one of Digger's offspring. So wear a cup if you have one.
In your log, please relate a personal experience, or cure, for the chiggers.
Co-ordinates were determined with a Garmin 60Cx with WAAS enabled, under cloudy conditions, averaged over a three minute span, to an accuracy of 9.6 ft.
Enjoy!
