Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series set at or near churches in the lovely surroundings of the Shropshire countryside.

We’d like to thank The Washers for conceiving the idea, initiating the series and inviting other cachers to add to it.

The Collegiate Church of St. Mary Magdalene built on a sandstone escarpment was founded in 1086 (with a mention in the Domesday Book) as a collegiate establishment by Robert de Montgomery who controlled Shropshire for the King. The building of the college, the nearby motte and bailey castle and a town were all parts of his attempt to establish a borough but all were abandoned very early in the 12th Century in favour of Bridgnorth to the north. The church’s tower and nave were rebuilt in 1714 and the south aisle and porch were added in 1854.

At the suggested parking spot you will observe an elevator built into the sandstone that rises up to the top of the rock face to church level. This is possibly the modern equivalent of a “Stairway to Heaven”. We also liked the addition of a doorbell that we presume worshippers have to press to ring for “Service”.

A close watch should be kept on geokids. Due to the location of the church there are some steep drops around parts of the churchyard so please take extreme care when walking around the grounds.

When we placed the cache there was, what we believe to be, a parliament of rooks with their raucous caws circling above the church and graveyard giving the place quite a spooky feel, even in broad daylight.

The cache is a camo’d 450ml Lock ‘n’ Lock type container. Please ensure the cache is well hidden when you replace it.

Limited parking is situated by the rock face below the church.
