Conington is a village in Cambridgeshire near the town of St Ives. The church there has been dedicated to St Mary since 1465 and perhaps two centuries earlier. It has an unusual appearance, with three distinct styles brought about by major works to prop up the tower!
The Lych gate leads to an avenue of 12 yews trees (representing the twelve apostles). There is a gravestone part hidden by one of the apostles, which is popularly believed to mark the resting place of the mason who built the spire and who, despairing of ever being able to point it straight to heaven, jumped from the tower landing at this spot. The church, lychgate and this gravestone all have listed building status.
At the back the church overlooks a lovely panorama of fields a lovely place of peace and quiet.
