Geocache Description:

Old A30 Revisited - Mitchell

The A30 is the backbone of Cornwall. Over the years, road 'improvement' schemes have altered its course, bypassing significant sections of the 'old' road. It's surprising how many of these orphaned bits of the old A30 there are in Cornwall.

The trip from Land's End to the county border (Dunheved Bridge), is about 80 miles. Up to 50 miles of which can be travelled using about 18 to 20 sections of the old A30. And I'm sorry to say that I think they have all been bypassed in my lifetime!

June 1995 saw the completion of a seven mile section of dual-carriageway running from Goss Moor to Carland Cross. It bypassed Indian Queens, Fraddon, Summercourt, and Mitchell. Previously, each of those villages was a major bottleneck, especially in the holiday season.

Mitchell Sign

When Mitchell was bypassed, it made a huge difference to the village. The A30 is accessible only from the eastern end of the village, so there is very little 'through' traffic.

The cache is NOT accessible from the A30 dual-carriageway. You need to be on the OLD road. It is an offence to park on the dual-carriageway, and it's dangerous, so please don't do it.

At the western end of the village, there is a gate closing off the derelict remains of the old A30 leading up towards Carland Cross. The cache is not far from that gate, and it's a handy parking spot!

You're looking for a small plastic container. It shold be an easy find if you use the hint. If you need it, here's a *spoiler picture* showing the position of the cache.

HISTORY AND UPDATES:

This cache was originally placed as a 35mm film case 'Micro' but it regularly got wet because it is very exposed to the elements. So now it's a small lock-n-lock container. I've maintained the 'Micro' style log so that it can be kept inside the 35mm film case which is itself inside the plastic box. I've done this in an attempt to keep the log dry

Please remember to put the log back in the film canister, to ensure it stays dry.

In December 2010 the cache was moved a couple of metres to a more secure spot. The hint and spoiler picture have been updated accordingly.
