Old Kentucky Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Lumberjack Tom: Thanks to crossingguardians for the heads-up about the clearing of trees, brush and vegetation at this site, an event that left the ammo box pretty well exposed. Because of this and the fact that the park has now designated the area as "resting," I've chosen to archive the cache. Vaya con Dios, Old Kentucky!

Geocache Description:

Cache is an ammo box. There is ample parking nearby, although sometimes the area can be crowded, especially on fair afternoons. A light hike will deliver you to the site.

****************************************************

Old Kentucky, they called him, dug coal for his pay
And willingly traded his night for his day.
With a family to feed and a home to maintain,
He gave up the sun, but didn’t complain.

And day after day and year after year
He’d show up at night and then disappear
Down the shaft of a mine that knew him so well
To muscle a pick-ax in a black hole of Hell.

But Old Kentucky proved true to his name,
And weakened with age, and then became lame,
Yet still clawed for coal in work never done
And one day, in a coal-cart, was raised to the sun.

I pen these words today in honor of the many unsung coal miners of our great state. Their noble spirit and heroic work ethic are examples for us all.

The cache is simple and unpretentious-- like Old Kentucky.
