A Livable Community Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

gbmcache: This cache is being archived for obvious reasons. I had never thought that a small waterproof matchbox would be confused with a bomb. However, I do appreciate that the bomb squad was courteous enough to notify me of the confiscation.

"Regarding GC19YWE: A Livable Community – your cache was seized by the bomb squad after it was called in as an explosive. if you decide to replace it, please put it somewhere else. the law firm next to the tree it was in has had threats. thank you."

Geocache Description:

This cache may be over the heads of some. But we all have had DNF's have we not. Nevertheless, tools are available for anyone to locate the cache. Actually, from a certain point of view the container is visible.

The cache is in an old and interesting area of Charlotte known as Elizabeth. It is near the edge of Independence Park, one of Charlotte’s oldest. There are several other fun caches in the area.

Independence Park, created in 1905-6, is on five parcels of land along Seventh Street and includes Memorial Stadium and the Grady Cole Center. As nice as the park is now it was much grander, to include a large and beautiful rose garden, before the development of Independence Blvd. and the Brookshire Freeway. Accordingly, there was much controversy over the eventual destruction of portions of the park. To learn more about the history of Independence Park: (visit link)

Looking the other way from the cache toward Seventh Street you will see two buildings which house non-profit institutions. In one you will find the Boy Scouts of America Mecklenburg County Council Service Center. This center oversees over 200 Boy Scout troops and over 200 Cub Scout packs comprising over 18,000 Boy Scouts. To learn more about the scouting in Mecklenburg County: (visit link)

In the other is located the headquarters of Hospice & Palliative Care, Charlotte Region. This non-profit organization's mission is to relieve suffering and improve the quality and dignity of life through compassionate hospice care for those at the end of life, and palliative care for those with advanced illness. The existence of both depends on the support of volunteer workers. If you are of a mind, and have some free time in which you are not geocaching, you will be welcomed as a volunteer. The rewards are huge, better than any FTF.

It is the non-commercial institutions, such as parks and volunteer supported organizations, which make for a livable community.

Please scroll the log tightly before replacing it in the short portion of the capsule. This will lessen fraying of the log's edges.
