Safe Passage Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RenoRaiders: This foot bridge and, sadly, the entire neighborhood has gotten pretty ugly. As much as I liked the story behind this bridge I don't want to send people into a trashy area like this anymore. Done

Geocache Description:

log only micro, BYOP

This pedestrian overpass was suggested by, and dedicated to, Charles “Chuck” Hendrickson.

Hendrickson was a patrolman with the Reno Police Department and would escort young children daily across busy Oddie Boulevard to nearby Rita Cannan Elementary. Interestingly on the day of the ribbon cutting in 1970 Hendrickson was presented with the plaque but asked to hold onto in until workers could complete painting.

Hendrickson retired in 1980 and the plaque became a permanent fixture in his bedroom, having never been asked to return it by the city. A fellow retired officer notified Hendrickson in 2004 that the city was planning a ceremony to dedicate the bridge to a local Reverend (William C. Webb, forty years of service). He then came forward and informed the City Manager that the bride had already been dedicated to him.

The city acknowledged their error and the original plaque was installed.
