BNC - Caching is Fu-Tile Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

HoustonControl: It saddens me to have to do this, but this one has run its course. The cache had changed over the years - the old house foundation that was the original first waypoint was bulldozed - and now someone stole the tile-covered ammo can that was the final. All I found today was the soggy lock-n-lock that had been inside the ammo can. Archiving. Thanks to all who visited and thanks to the Christmas family upon whose homesite the final rested all these years.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Baytown Nature Center, the entrance of which is located at N29 45.293 W95 02.142. There is an entrance fee of $4 for adults 13 and older. Children 5-12 and Seniors are $1. Gates open 30 minutes before sunrise and close 30 minutes after sunset. Sorry, but pets are not allowed in the nature center, even on leash.

The Baytown Nature center is located in the old Brownwood subdivision. Once an upscale neighborhood with great views of the surrounding bays, most of the area has sunk to sea level or below due to subsidence from groundwater pumping. After repeated floodings in the 1960's and 70's, the neighborhood was finished off by Hurricane Alicia in 1983. The remaining homeowners were bought out by FEMA and the City of Baytown and the area was eventually converted into a nature center and wetlands. A site on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, the Nature Center is home to over 300 species of resident and migratory birds. This site is primarily land-based but there there are some water-based areas around the marshes and along the bays. Some of the old neighborhood streets are still there, though many of them are closed to vehicular traffic. You can still see a few foundations and other evidence of the homes that were once here. Read more about the history of the area here.

This is a two-stop multi-cache along the Cypress Loop Trail. From the Butterfly Garden parking, start at the Cypress Loop/Karankawa Loop Trail (if you have detailed maps on your GPSr, it may show up as Macarthur St.). At the listed coordinates, you will find information directing you to the final cache down the trail a ways. Originally, the first waypoint was a slab from a former residence with bathroom tiles still in place. You had to count the tiles to get the numbers needed for the final cache. Unfortunately, they bulldozed the slab to create more wetland ponds, so I've had to come up with a workaround. Not nearly as fun as the original, but it'll do...

I found out later that the final cache is located at the former homesite of the Christmas family. I guess if you knew where they lived, you could just skip the first part and go straight to the final - LOL.

Please re-hide the cache just as you found it to protect it from muggles. Have fun!"
