This is a side trip off of the Womble Auto Tour, and is one of the most fantastic of views. The terrain to the cache is not that difficult but there are some very dangerous cliffs all around so we have upped the terrain rating. Hold the kid's hands here.
The 1 1/2 hike up the road will test the best of hikers,due to the incline. Many locals use an ATV to access this spot. If the gates are open, do NOT take the family sedan up this road. There used to be a crystal mining operation on this mountain and a U. S. Forest fire tower. Many years ago likestocanoe1's agri class traveled up to "check out the view". I am imagining they were supposed to be learning something, but it passed him by. :o) The foundations of the old tower and the old well are all that are left, but present day communication towers have taken the tower's place. Take the time - enjoy the view.
